JESUS IS GOD

Jesus is God Part 2

By Joe Palmer

  1. The Historical Jesus
    1. Jesus Claimed to Be God.
    2. John 14:7 -11 NKJV – “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”  Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”  Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own [authority]; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
    3. Our options?
      1. Two Alternatives
      2. He knew his claim was false
      3. He made a deliberate misrepresentation
      4. He was a liar, hypocrite, demon, or fool
    4. He did not know his claims were false?
      1. He was sincerely deluded
      2. He was a lunatic
    5. His Claims were true. He is the Lord
      1. Accept it?
      2. Reject it?
  2. Can we believe?
    1. One of the problems of believing in Jesus is that the logic is circular.
      1. Jesus is God’s Son, I know Jesus is God’s son because the Bible says so, Therefore Jesus is God’s son
      2. If the Bible states something it cannot be necessarily assumed to be true, unless we can prove the Bible to be reliable.
      3. If we can prove the Bible to be reliable then we must accept its claims about Jesus.
    2. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5:17)
    3. Jesus wasn’t just a man who showed up and claimed to be God’s son.
      1. The nation of Israel was waiting for a Messiah.
      2. The Old Testament predicted his coming.
      3. The Jewish Priests, Rabbi’s and leaders had spent their lives studying the prophecies of his coming.
      4. He even told them that other would claim to be Christ Mt 24:24 .
    4. Jesus looked to Jews who knew the Prophets predicted his course.
      1. Luke 4:17 NKJV – And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:  “The Spirit of the LORD [is] upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to [the] poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to [the] captives And recovery of sight to [the] blind, [To] set at liberty those who are oppressed;  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”  Then He closed the book, and gave [it] back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.  And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
      2. Luke 24:27 NKJV – And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
      3. Luke 24:44 NKJV – Then He said to them, “These [are] the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and [the] Prophets and [the] Psalms concerning Me.“
    5. Numerous texts in Gospels, Acts, Letters use the prophets to uphold his claim as God’s son.
      1. Act 3:18 NKJV – But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.
      2. Act 13:29 NKJV – Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took [Him] down from the tree and laid [Him] in a tomb.
      3. Act 17:2 ,3NKJV – Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,  explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”
  3. What Did the prophet say.
    1. Born of a Virgin
      1. Isa 7:14 NKJV – Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
      2. Mat 1:18 NKJV – Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
      3. Is this True?
        1. Can’t be proven
        2. Taught early that Christ fulfilled this.
        3. Criticized by non believers calling him the illegitimate son

And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”–that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty [pieces] of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD for the potter.
      2. Mat 27:5 NKJV – Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
