The Lord’s Prayer Vs Jimmy Stewart

The Lord’s Prayer Vs Jimmy Stewart

By Joe Palmer

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10  Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11  Give us this day our daily bread,

12 and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Matt 6:9-13 (ESV)

Perhaps no prayer is more famous than the Lord’s Model Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13.    In this prayer he

  • Respects God calling him the Father in heaven
  • Worships him calling his name hallowed.
  • Submits to God and his kingdom.
  • Asks God for continued daily blessings.
  • Asks God for continued grace, and protection from evil.

In the 1965 movie Shenandoah Jimmy Stewart, a Virginia farmer prays a prayer that lays in striking contrast to this prayer.

I have no doubt that few reading would ever pray this prayer.  But what I wonder is do we live this prayer?  Do we live each day thinking that we are the ones who have earned all our blessings?   Do we fail to go to God in prayer daily and thank him for the many blessing we receive from him?
